Building a baseball lineup around who actually showed up

Most lineup tools start with your roster, the full list of every kid on the team. That's the wrong starting point, because the roster isn't who's playing today. The kid who's at a birthday party can't bat third no matter how good a third hitter he is. A lineup is who's at the field, and the coaches who get this right build from availability first.

Get the headcount before you touch the order

You can't assign nine positions until you know which nine you have. Lock the RSVPs the night before, marking each kid going, maybe, or not-going, then build off the players who confirmed. Anything you draw up before that is a guess you'll redo at the field.

Build in the order that survives a change

Set it up so a single drop doesn't unravel everything:

• Lock your positions for the first few innings, not all six
• Keep a mental sub plan for the spots most likely to change
• Bat the whole roster that showed, so a late scratch just shortens the order instead of breaking it

When the structure is loose in the right places, a no-show is a swap, not a teardown.
