CalledUp started the way most of these things do, out of being annoyed. Coaching a little league team should be about the kids and the game. Instead, a huge chunk of it is logistics. Who is coming. Who has snacks this week. Which field, and is it the one by the parking lot or the other one. What the lineup is.
The tools were a mess
Almost every coach we talked to was running their season across a group text, a shared spreadsheet, a paper roster, and whatever they could remember. The real apps existed, but they were built for travel programs and serious scorekeeping. Way too much for a Saturday rec league, and priced like it too.
What we actually wanted
- A roster, a schedule, and a lineup that all live in one place
- RSVPs a parent can answer in one tap
- A way to message the team that doesn't vanish into a group thread
- Something free and simple enough that a volunteer would actually use it
Running a team is already a second job. The software should hand you time back, not ask for more.
That's the whole idea. The stuff a rec coach actually needs, none of the stuff they don't, and free to start. We're building it out in the open and shipping something most weeks. If you coach, or you're just the parent who ended up in charge of the snack schedule, come give it a try.
