If you watch any youth baseball practice in America, you'll see the same scene. A well-meaning dad standing behind a 9-year-old, yelling cues. "Elbow up. Bend your knees. Hands back. Squish the bug. Hit the ball to right field." The kid is now thinking about six things simultaneously and is about to swing like a folding chair.
I've been that coach. I've also stood on the bench watching a kid completely shut down because their head was overloaded with instructions. Hitting at the youth level is mostly about contact and confidence. Mechanics matter, but only a few of them, and only when introduced one at a time. Most of what you've been told to teach is either wrong, overrated, or counterproductive at this age.
The two things that actually matter at 6 to 9
Eyes on the ball, balanced finish. That's it.
If a kid is watching the ball from the pitcher's hand to the bat and can finish their swing without falling over, they have the foundation. Everything else can be fixed later. Most things will fix themselves with enough practice.
Coaches love to introduce hand position, hip rotation, weight transfer, stride length, and bat path in the same lesson. Kids can't process this. They'll pick one cue, focus on it, and ignore the ball. Then they strike out and feel bad.
Pick one thing. Work on it for three weeks. Move on.
The drills that work
These three drills do most of the heavy lifting for ages 6 to 9. Run them in this order at every practice and you'll see hitters improve.
Tee work. Place the tee at belt height, middle of the plate. Kid takes 10 swings. The whole point of tee work is to feel a good swing without worrying about timing. Move the tee inside, outside, low, and high as they get older. At 6 and 7, just middle.
Soft toss. Coach kneels at a safe angle, tosses underhand from 6 to 8 feet away. 10 swings. This adds timing. Toss to the same spot every time at first, then mix it up after a few weeks.
Front toss. Coach kneels behind a screen 15 to 20 feet in front of the plate, throws overhand pitches at game speed but with a smoother release. 10 swings. This is the bridge from soft toss to live pitching. Use this for 8 and 9 year olds.

What "see the ball" really means
Most kids think they're watching the ball. They're not. They're watching the general area where the pitcher is. Big difference.
A drill that fixes this: have the kid call out the color of the ball as it crosses the plate. Use two ball colors (white and yellow practice balls work). Coach pitches randomly. Kid swings only if it's the right color. Forces them to actually track the ball into the zone.
Another version: number the balls with a marker. 1 through 4. Kid calls out the number after the pitch. I ran this with a group of 8-year-olds last spring and the first session looked like a magic show. They couldn't believe how much ball they weren't actually seeing. They'll look like they're performing a trick for the first few weeks. They're just finally doing what they thought they were already doing.
What to ignore until they're at least 10
- Hip rotation cues
- Stride length adjustments
- Bat path discussion
- "Squish the bug"
- "Throw the hands"
- Pulling the ball intentionally
- Two-strike approach
- Anything about launch angle
I'm not saying these things don't matter. I'm saying they can't be taught to a kid who's still learning to consistently make contact. You're teaching a fish to whistle.
The "squish the bug" problem
For years coaches taught kids to pivot their back foot and rotate, calling it "squish the bug." I taught it myself for a couple of seasons because that's what I was taught. Then I actually watched professional hitters in slow motion.
The back foot comes off the ground. The bug is not getting squished. The bug is fine.
If you're coaching the back foot, you're coaching a habit that pros spend real money to unlearn. Just let the kid swing. If they're off balance, the back foot will do what it needs to do.
The stance doesn't matter
Open, closed, square, wide, narrow, knees bent, knees straight. None of it matters at the youth level. Some of the best hitters in baseball history had stances that look insane on video. Ichiro. Craig Counsell. Tony Batista.
If a kid has a comfortable stance and can balance through the swing, leave them alone. The only stance correction worth making at 8U is if their feet are so close together they can't stay upright, or so far apart they can't stride.
When to introduce timing
This is where most coaches mess up. Timing can't be taught with words. It's taught with reps against pitching. You can do all the dry swings you want—the kid will still be early or late when the ball is actually moving.
Live pitching reps are the only thing that builds timing. Cage time is good, but they need to see real pitchers throwing real pitches. Schedule scrimmages with other teams before the season starts. Two scrimmages will do more for hitting than a month of tee work. Getting the roster locked down so those scrimmages actually happen with a full squad is its own challenge—cutting down on game-day no-shows covers the RSVP side of that problem.
What to say at the plate during games
Almost nothing.
If you're the third base coach, your job is to tell them where to run, not to give swing tips between pitches. Yelling "hands back" while the kid is in the box does nothing good. It distracts them and it tells the pitcher you have no confidence in your hitter.
Between innings, one short conversation. "You're dropping your hands a little, try to keep them up." Then leave it alone. They can't fix a swing in real time. They can only try the next pitch.
A word on bat size
A bat that's too heavy will wreck a swing faster than anything else. If a kid can't get the bat through the zone without dipping their shoulder, the bat is too heavy. Drop weights of -10 or even -12 are normal for youth players. Bigger is not better.
Check league rules. Most leagues now require USA Bat certification. If a parent shows up with a non-certified bat in 2026, it can't be used in games.
The actual goal at this age
Get the kid to walk up to the plate expecting to make contact. Not hoping. Expecting. That's the entire mental side of youth hitting. Build that with reps, with quiet coaching, and by not flooding their head with cues.
Confidence is built on contact. Contact is built on tracking the ball. Track the ball and finish balanced. Two things. That's the whole lesson.
